Young Leaders Award

The Howard School Sports Partnership organise and run the Young Leaders programme in Gillingham and Rainham primary schools.  This day long course  is available for students in Years 5 and 6 and aims to educate them in leadership skills such as communication, organisation and teamwork.

The course is delivered by a qualified PE teacher and school sports coordinator from a local secondary school, who work with the students throughout the day to ensure they learn valuable leadership skills.

The Young Leader Award teaches the students about the STEP (Space, Task, Equipment, People) principle, playground games, being a leader, how to work as a team and how to plan a full and enjoyable activity.

Throughout the course, students have to demonstrate that they meet qualities required to become a good leader such as listening skills, kindness, safety, confidence and many other skills that will enable them to be effective playground leaders.

On successful completion of the course the students will become Playground Leaders, assisting younger students by organising fun games and activities for them at break and lunch time.  Young leaders can also be deployed to assist staff in a level one school games intra-school sports competition at school as required in the Bronze School Games Award.
